Movies to See Before You Die

March 26, 2009 – 9:14 PM | by Michael P. Johnson

The staff at Yahoo! Movies has put together a list of the 100 films you must see before you die. I haven’t seen every movie on the list. There are quite a few foreign movies I haven’t seen. But there are some problems with some of the movies on the list. And a few omissions I’m surprised about.

For instance, they have the movie “Alien” but not “Aliens” which was a much better movie. One of the rare cases where a sequel was better than it’s original in a series. And it’s not on the list?

Groundhog Day” is on the list but not “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off“? Outrageous! On what criteria was this decision made?

No “The Princess Bride“? That’s just crazy!

Well, at least there are plenty of good pictures on the list. Some of my favorites are “The African Queen“, “The Bridge on the River Kwai“, “Casablanca“, “Saving Private Ryan“, “The Searchers“, “Seven Samurai“, “The Shawshank Redemption“, and “Star Wars” to name just a few.

Of course any list like this is subjective. No one would ever have a list that matches mine. And that’s okay! It makes for a great discussion. I do intend to add some of the foreign films to my Netflix queue. We shall see what I think about them.

Princess Mononoke is the only animated movie I could pick out. Rashomon is definitely a must see!

I’ve added Rashomon to my queue. So what anime should I see before I die, if you were to edit that list? Thanks Edy!

Everything else Miyazaki, not just Princess Mononoke. Tokyo Godfathers is also an excellent movie
