Hit a bullet 19 out of 23 times

Friday, July 31st, 2009

090730-N-XXXXX-001-400pxUSS Hopper (DDG 70) scored a hit in the latest Aegis Ballistic Missile Defense (BMD) at-sea firing event on July 30. This makes it 19 out of 23 attempts for the Navy.

I’ve always followed military technology developments and enjoy military history. Why I never served in the armed forces is a mystery to many people, including myself. Anyway, I remember a debate I had with a friends in high school about the future of warfare. A lot of wild claims were made in that argument by me and my friend. I’ll save all those recollections for another time.  But on the subject of Star Wars Missile Defense and Brilliant Pebbles my friend had claimed, “you can’t hit a bullet with a bullet.” (more…)

USA Navy Satellite Shootdown

Thursday, February 21st, 2008

This is video of the U.S. Navy successfully shooting down a damaged spy satellite February 20, 2008. See more DoD video clips at http://www.dodvclips.mil and at http://www.youtube.com/user/DODvClips.

This second video is from a press conference announcing the success.

We talked about this last night on the What Would Jesus Podcast. And you can read more about the Navy Intercepting Non-Functioning Satellite. Pretty cool stuff.

A minor point but a source of local pride is that the USS Lake Erie and the USS Decatur, two of the three ships involved in coordinating the attack on the satellite, were built at Bath Iron Works, in Bath, Maine. My home town.
